Some people have said in response to this thread that the harpers and the dragonriders are keeping the language from drifting across the continent, but exactly this, the remote fishing village Menolly is from where they have one harper and it's a big deal when they see a dragon? Not enough
I love it but by the time I read it I had SOME knowledge of historical language change (thanks 4th year Spanish teacher making us read snippets of Don Quixote in the original). There is no way this remote fishing village would speak a dialect completely intelligible to the entire continent.

Menolly survived horrid abuse and ran away and survived on her own for months. And we all cheered for her! Ngl, I think she made so many of us feel seen and less alone.

My late, great Menolly used to start yelling at us around 3:30 pm trying to get us to follow her into the bed. We called her Princess because she could get very imperial in her demands.

I read the Harper Hall books first, and then moved onto the Dragonriders novels. Menolly was my favorite character of all time back then.

I think I was probably only a bit older when I discovered Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon as a hardcover trilogy on my parents’ bookshelf. Never looked back! Menolly remains one of my fave characters. 🥰 🐉

Probably my favorite is the little YA/novella about the harpers: Menolly loves music but grows up in a remote fishing village where her father sees little point in music. She runs away after an injury, becomes a Harper (girls can't be harpers?!), adventure!
