#Menorcan
@carlyja22.bsky.social I thought I'd sent you a reply but here it is (again?) My favourite breakfast treat was a Menorcan speciality an "Ensaimada" especially when dunked in hot chocolate essential whenever we visited Menorca. 😋😂💚

Also picked out a poss Yelk. There was a good passage of Balearics, this slimmer pale bird was doing some head-lifting. The Spanish are seeing more and in the Atlantic, apparently some photographs from a pelagic off Portugal. Surely too many are being seen now to just say they are all ‘Menorcan’!!

I'm always cautious making claims about "anywhere else", even places I've been. What's the radio an Icelander, a Menorcan, an Iowan, listen to like? A week on holiday in those places doesn't inform me.

Interesting way to start our family holiday in Menorca. My wife went for a run, tripped on some rough ground and fell. I therefore spent this morning with her in a very efficient Menorcan A & E department. Can you tell which one is the before and which one after? She’s fine now. Diazepam kicked in.

There is currently no reliable way to distinguish Menorcan-type birds from Yelkouans in the field. Yelkouan type birds have also been found in Balearic colonies (small numbers).

For clarification, it was a comment not re BBRC but the diligence of birders to record birds as good as Mark's ~ there could be a shrug of indifference if a bird isn't a full species. That said, seawatchers who are sharp enough to pick up a Yelkouan/Menorcan will doubtless record it for posterity.
July 26, 2026 at 2:34 PM
Its a great looking bird. I hope BBRC give it room to breath & publish as Yelkouan/Menorcan. We know that it is so important to keep track of records of birds like this, as they could easily be (will be?) consigned to the bin, simply because they're only found within Mediterranean Shearwater.

There are so many valid arguments regarding the treatment of Balearic/ Mediterranean/Yelkouan/Menorcan Shearwaters (& the distinct Canarian Manx) ~ some being expressed in the thread above. The primary takeaway for me is that this exciting Yelkouan has been superbly documented.

Hence the need to still record as Balearic or Yelkouan phenotypes , using Mediterranean Shearwater after the re-lumping means these valuable records will be lost. Some of the Spanish seawatchers are seeing more in Atlantic, so are they all Menorcan? This is Yelkouan phenotype origin unknown

@seaskywatch.bsky.social Congratulations—excellent photo. Menorcan-like birds cannot be reliably differentiated from other western Yelkouan populations. This is a highly interesting Yelkouan-like record. These observations are valuable and should be formally recorded with all the information.
July 26, 2026 at 10:56 AM
Surely, Mark, these things are perfectly do-able in the field whereas Brett's point is that on current knowledge Yelkouan isn't distinguishable from 'Menorcan' - disregarding pragmatism, on the basis of the evidence presented your bird and the Portland birds in 2020 could just as easily be either.
