Then again, "maid" here might not stand for "woman hired to do the housework", but just "young woman" instead. (so the male equivalent should rather be "merlad").

Therefore, I posit that the gender-neutral term for the term should be "mersquirt".

One single issue i have with this
The maid in mermaid comes from maiden,as in maiden of the sea
As such, since most merman in myths are older males, so merman is tehnically accurate...i propose merlad for the less represented younger male merfolk
