but it's interesting (to me anyway) that, like, Merseybeat exploded in 1963 but by 1966 nearly all its exponents were finished as hitmaking entities - the obvious exception, the Beatles, had by then left the Merseybeat sound behind

Incidentally one way that the Beatles were unique is that they're the only band I can think of that started in one vital scene (Merseybeat and the NEMS artists) then flourished in another totally different one (the London R&B scene as it moved into the hippie counterculture).
