This drumkit, created for Alex González of the Latin rock band Maná, deepens the symbolism. Expressing the group’s Mexican heritage, it features the iconic skull imagery of Día de Muertos, a celebration that openly acknowledges death and its equalizing power. By painting and customizing this drum- kit and others for numerous rock groups, John Douglas joins an ancient global lineage of artists who have crafted anthropomorphic drums. The entire kit features a vibrant teal or turquoise color scheme on the drum shells, adorned with detailed "Day of the Dead" (Día de los Muertos) artwork. • Bass Drum: In the lower-left foreground sits a large bass drum. The front head features a large, stylized sugar skull wearing a traditional brown mariachi sombrero. Below the skull, a purple banner reads "MANÁ" in white block letters, with "Alex González" printed just above it in a smaller, red font. Red roses flank the bottom of the skull. • Toms and Snare: Several smaller rack toms and a snare drum are positioned behind and above the bass drum, matching the teal color and skull motifs. • Cymbals and Hardware: Numerous polished bronze cymbals of varying sizes are mounted on intricate, gleaming chrome stands. Notably, several of the cymbal wing nuts are shaped like small silver skulls.

Hairwork wreath in the form of a lyre, ca. 1870 Human hair, paper, wire, and wood Department of Musical Instruments, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Lyres and harps are favorite subjects of Victorian hairwork. The motifs link an art form associated with death to an emblem of resurrection and angels. Large wreaths like this one incorporate hair from multiple generations of a family, including the living and the dead, but all hair art ultimately becomes a memorial. This lyre-shaped example echoes the power of music to remind us of life's transience. Pic description: The central structure forms a lyre with vertical parallel lines representing strings, topped with small, rounded tuning pegs. A thick, horseshoe-shaped bouquet wraps around the lower half and rises up both sides of the lyre. The bouquet is constructed entirely of tightly coiled, braided, and woven strands of human hair. The hair is painstakingly wrapped around thin wire to create multidimensional flowers, leafy sprigs, petals, and delicate filigree lace patterns. The artwork exhibits varied shades of brown, blonde, and gray hair. This indicates the use of hair from multiple generations of family members, both living and deceased.
