Metagames are ecosystems etc etc

you all aren't ready for my Hottest Take:

fighting games are at their most fun when they are solidly 6/10 experiences, when their metagames can form around exploiting the ways they are uniquely flawed as competitive titles

Like, I know they think there is this big problem with data access and metagames getting solved quickly, but like, look at the tremendous churn we have in current Standard. Large competitive events with full data create amazing formats!

"metagames" also apply to content creation

It's the Steam Summer Sale again

but you know what, this shit isn't even special anymore, because 1. Steam has storewide sales every other damn week now and 2. they never do special big events and metagames anymore

Excited to share my Super Slam spoiler card with you all today! I think this is quite a potent sideboard card that I fully expect to see play in future metagames. I also really enjoy the theming of the card.

paying close attention to the legacy and vintage metagames

Sometimes you need to metagame life, before it metagames you.

Im quoted in this article explaining Plundercore and Plunderludics. It does a good job connecting it with the broader idea of games vs metagames, and to the current political moment. give it a read!!
From @bigflan.bsky.social's yuri lowell prints a gun to plundercore and plunderludics. I wrote an introduction to videoludic détournement for The Bunker magazine, with comments from @johnleeerg.bsky.social and the plunderludics working group (Mut, Gurn Group, @jwhop.bsky.social) [article in EN]

If their concern is metagames 'solving' too quickly: We live in a 7 sets a year world - it's gonna change in 3 weeks anways!!!!!

FaB hot take of the day ! 🌶️

FaB players put way too much emphasis on hero mastery and not enough on hero selection.

Tournament metagames are always waaaay too open compared to what they should be given powerlevel gaps between decks.

Want to be clear, UB brings a lot of new opportunities to make fun and cool cards for Magic, but specifically for a hyper engaged player like me who nerds out over the micro stories around cards and metagames, UB detracts from my enjoyment of the storytelling aspect.

Content creators follow "metagames," you see those clickbait thumbnails and titles because they work

If another creator in your niche is parroting stuff from RT and getting big views (that may be botted), you are pressured to do the same because it appears to be part of the formula that's working

For our alphabet challenge at our #FLGS Meta Games Unlimited, we were on the letter "M". Meadow is a cute thinky card drafting tableau building game. Four players was just a bit long, but we were laughing and having a great time.

you know this site is a lot better than twitter because when the smogon university social media admin spreads the word about bans, here you don't get 10+ crybabies in the comments and QRTs complaining about bans in metagames they've never played a second of in their lives
Baxcalibur, Mega Alazakam, and Mega Lucario Z are no longer allowed in Champions OU!

Find out more information about it here:

Of course, while Ryan is great, none of this remotely makes any sense. Wizards is producing seven Standard sets this year, so we literally will not have time for the puzzle to not be fresh. Look a the metagames from RC Portland to PT Richmond to AC11 (and RC Milwaukee on Saturday). Enormous changes!

Yes, I came here to say this, after I saw Amabel's quote post.

I've seen it used this way. But it has other more popular meanings, like leveraging player knowledge, or a game about games.

Agata Waszkiewicz has a book about metagames and video games, which touches in this.

I haven't considered how the Gathering also consists of the infrastructure players build. From the TO's who keep scenes alive in their areas, to long time writers who still do weekly coverage of metagames, personal events, to builders who create resources like 17lands, mtgtop8...

my first paper, which I co-authored with @jaakkostenros.bsky.social and @sotamaa.bsky.social, is now published!! it is essentially an invitation, and a tool, to reflect on and experiment with the rules we play by to invent personal metagames and shape agencies. open access dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

makes me wonder if the different ranks on ladder are just a microcosm of metagames

@carmparens.bsky.social this is delightful, thank you for spreading joy

It is hard to overstate how consistently well balanced & diverse @marvelsnap.bsky.social metagames are due to regular balance passes.

The only thing above a 3% play rate right now on Untapped is the "Merlin" group which contains a number of different decks.

While I do miss plain text stories (especially if the writer had good prose) I think the motion comics are a more than worthy storytelling successor. They're a lot more engaging IMO because of the art and are a lot less expensive to produced compared to CGs and metagames.
