Engineered metamaterials use embedded, distributed learning to autonomously adapt shape, remember past states, and optimize performance in real time — blurring boundaries between passive materials and active, life-like systems with applications in robotics, medicine, and aerospace
Metamaterials that learn to change shape - Nature Physics
Physical networks can learn to accomplish tasks on the fly by adjusting their internal parameters. Now it is shown that such physical learning can be achieved in metamaterials that can learn to change...

...Don't look at me I'm still writing space opera. All my imagination of the future is just "man wouldn't it be cool if AR and metamaterials and GMOs made everything cool as fuck?"
SF was in the process of petrifying into space opera. Now it has a Wells-sized opportunity, because we once again need help imagining an unimaginable future.
It must really suck to be a scifi writer right now. Writing a story that in some way touches on AI? If they're perfectly human-equivalent intelligences it'll read as out of date, if they're dumb in a way that's surpassed by current gen frontier models at time of publication it'll read as out of date

Programming fracture resistance in metamaterials via elastic instabilities - Nature
Elastic instabilities in mechanical metamaterials can be harnessed to programme fracture behaviour, transforming instability from a failure mechanism into a design principle that increases fracture energy by up to tenfold.
