"wtf are you working on" giving agents metacognition

this halloween, why not read up on the scariest topic of all (hierarchical Bayesian modeling)? 🦇🎃💀

I've got a new tutorial with @smfleming.bsky.social demonstrating the use of our R package hmetad!

Quantifying metacognition with the hmetad package in R
A longstanding goal in metacognition research is the quantification of confidence-related parameters independently from task performance. While there is now a proliferation of generative models of con...

Metacognition is not intelligence. Knowing how you learn, and checking whether your strategy is working, can partly offset lower aptitude. The EEF puts the average gain from teaching it at about seven months of extra progress, when taught within subject content.

I've actually written about this phenomenon. Handwriting influences the development of a white matter structure in the brain called the Arcuate Fasciculus. which is involved in metacognition. Screens in early development displace that development. interfering with the development of metacognition.

oh my god if you google "metacognition and debugging" the first hit is a blog post with that exact name, i love the modern world

If you are interested in how to model and quantify metacognition within a flexible hierarchical Bayesian framework, @kevingoneill.github.io has developed a fantastic tutorial paper to complement our new R package hmetad. Do check it out!

I like to move it, move it. But how well do I KNOW it, know it? Recently presented my PhD research on Motor Metacognition at the Science Slam! A fun chance to step outside the academic presentations, get performative, and bring together two things I love: science and arts!

overall, our package opens avenues for sophisticated models of metacognition in a simple & comprehensive framework, and we hope that this helps set a consistent evidentiary standard across the field!

What if some skills paid interest on every other skill you learn? That’s how I see meta-skills, and why AI makes them matter more now. www.ctnet.co.uk/meta-skill-e... #Meta-skill #Writing #Reading #AI
What is a Meta-skill? Reading, Writing and Metacognition
What is a meta-skill? For me, it's a skill that helps you learn another skill. Here's why reading, writing and metacognition compound, and why that matters now.

Hmmm..I’d look for self-awareness, metacognition, and the ability to reflect on its own internal states.

None would prove consciousness alone, but together they would make the question much harder to dismiss.

A lot of this is about metacognition— which the day one keynote at AIME-Con— hammered relentlessly. My high school's English department spent four years talking to us about metacognition.

I am saying that I feel prepared for this, but I don't expect others to be.

the paper also includes an added bonus, applying our new performance-controlled metric meta-delta to reanalyse links between metacognition and mental health 👇
finally, we re-analyze a dataset by Rouault et al. (2018) looking at associations between mental health factors and metacognition. using a novel measure of metacognitive bias (see quoted post), we find interesting associations with metacognitive bias!
