A great article (and a GREAT analogy) by @briles34.bsky.social about our recent exciting result about planets orbiting metal-poor stars (spoiler: there weren't any!).

offers a unique opportunity to study star formation in an environment with low metallicity. This allows scientists to better understand how stars formed in the early Universe, where metallicity was generally lower.

I didn’t know I needed my day to start with the astrophysical metallicity of a cauliflower, but I absolutely did.

Delicious silly science incoming:
Prompted by this and a need for distraction I Did Some Math. Turns out most extrasolar planets are quite cauliflower-compatible. A thread, with citations. And laboratory astrophysics. And footnotes.

Conclusions:
(1) bulk metallicity of cauliflower is consistent with many extrasolar planets
(2) irradiated[3] cauliflower C/O ratio is consistent with atmospheric measurements
(3) laboratory astrophysics funding should be increased

Thank you! Now to turn this into a TED talk.
