Metchley Fort was a #Roman fort in what is now #Birmingham.

It lies on the course of a Roman road, Icknield Street, and the University Birmingham in Edgbaston.

The fort was constructed soon after the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43.

Heard it said years ago that Metchley, Alcester Etc., formed part of a temporary frontier defence system in the early years after the Claudian invasion, but never seen any evidence of this since.

I'm a bit bonkers about this sort of thing, the first history book I owned was about Pompeii, my walk home from school took me through the remains of Metchley Roman fort before the modern developments. Spent a day (only) in Pompeii dragging my poor wife across the town under the hot August sun.
