The only reason BlueSky even exists is that it's essentially Twitter methadone.

After I quit Twitter, BlueSky was effectively my methadone.
Can social media be addictive?

@taylorlorenz.bsky.social says no.

“You wanting to communicate and chat with your friends every day is not an addiction,” says Lorenz. “And to frame it that way is incredibly harmful and anti-science.”

This is why I describe it as "methadone twitter". I mean this as a compliment.
Hard to argue.

Despite well-established benefits—methadone reduces overdose deaths by as much as 59 percent—and low risks, methadone is the only prescription drug that doctors cannot call into a pharmacy.

if bluesky feels like twitter methadone, that's a skill issue
October 12, 2026 at 4:39 AM
bluesky isn’t beating the “methadone twitter” allegations, but real twitter died a long time ago. X is fantastic if you want to keep relitigating the same beef about podcast personalities and movement politics we were having a decade ago. i want to look to the future; there is no future for X
It's not even the ethics of it. My career, my hobbies, my free time, hell, my whole life took off once I fully left Twitter. It is a place to go if you want to be stuck in a neverending race war feedback loop. Like not using ChatGPT, not using Twitter is a superpower. Remain employable; stay off it.
I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.
