A fun image processing distraction today -- how to clean up the noisy background of a photo of a microfilm of a medieval manuscript? Thread, in which I use Photoshop, but similar tools are available in GIMP and other image processing software.

Microfilm is a continuous strip like 16 or 35mm only without sprocket holes. Microfiche is a single sheet with all the images in a grid.

Some days I yearn for microfilm and newspaper morgues.
ABC News has now fully taken down the old 538 website, including all interactive projects since 2014. Aside from erasing history this prevents access to publicly released data, including raw polls, averages, model estimates & story dta. Totally unacceptable for a company (allegedly) doing journalism

i take an iced coffee to the job interview. while the interviewer is talking, i take a long sip from the straw, pulling the microfilm into my mouth. i lock eyes with the interviewer. we kiss deeply. the microfilm is no longer in my mouth. i return home through the checkpoint. it is berlin, 1970.

Did you know that Uvic has a vast repository of microfilm that anyone can just go and look at? Over a century of periodicals totally uncontaminated and airgapped from slop.
