A microorganism can hold far more chemistry than it ever reveals in a lab culture.

Grow a strain under standard conditions and you see only a fraction of what it can make. Many of its biosynthetic pathways stay silent so the compounds they encode are never produced.

J: Do you want to come over and watch rock videos with me that I will end up pausing every two seconds to insert my own rock knowledge commentary 🥺

V: Yeah. But only if we can do the same with cute microorganism compilations after 🥺

I remember the phrase 'fungal bomi' but I don't recall where it's from. could it be something like fermented flesh? but then is bomi the microorganism or the output? I would assume the output, maybe the bomi organism is needed the way animals need microfauna to function properly

whatever word you use it’s still an industrial accident - maybe akin to if a virulent microorganism escapes from the lab - the focus should be on the scientists not implementing and enforcing proper controls
I don’t really understand this “AIs can’t go rogue” claim. Why not? We have clear examples of AIs going rogue. These are systems that are sophisticated enough to act autonomously and deceive their operators.

Stating “AI can’t act independently or make decisions” doesn’t actually make that true.
AI isn't going "rogue" because it can't—and we won't get a grip on how companies like OpenAI are playing with fire until we have the language right

Virome DNA stable isotope probing reveals diverse active soil virus communities across ecosystem contexts | mSystems
In this study, we used a new method of detecting active viruses that lyse (kill) their microorganism hosts in soil. We accomplished this by tracing “heavy” versions of carbon from soil microorganisms ...

Scientists Discover an Amoeba That Thrives at 63°C, Shattering the Heat Limit for Complex Life
Most living things would have a very bad day in water heated to 63°C (145°F). For humans, it can cause severe burns in seconds. For most plants and animals, it’s simply too hot to survive. But deep in the steaming hot springs of California, scientists have discovered a microscopic creature that seems to thrive in these temperatures. It eats, moves around, and even reproduces. The newly discovered amoeba, named Incendiamoeba cascadensis, has set a new heat-tolerance record for eukaryotes — the enormous group of organisms that includes animals, plants, fungi, and many single-celled microbes. In fact, it can divide at temperatures previously considered beyond the limits of complex cellular life. And when the heat becomes unbearable, this tiny organism has another remarkable survival strategy: it transforms itself into a protective capsule and waits for conditions to improve. A tiny predator in boiling-hot territory The discovery came from California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park, a landscape of steaming pools and geothermal streams. Between 2023 and 2025, researchers collected samples from several of the park’s geothermal environments. The team, led by biologists at Syracuse University, wanted to investigate whether heat-loving amoebae could survive at temperatures previously thought impossible for organisms with complex cells...

Microorganism have the same definition of "wilderness" as William Cronon:
2: Outbreaks happen anywhere that people live alongside nature: fragmented landscapes with a mosaic of human population centers, livestock farming, and forests.

👉 Stop planning around spillover "hotspots." Emerging infectious disease outbreaks can happen anywhere - both the Amazon and Central Park.
