For a while there I got addicted to acquiring Mini PCs... (if the price is right I still am 💀)
The bottom 4 are actually the only ones online and doing stuff. Top 5 are for testing and spares.

My two NAS systems (ancient but reliable HP Microserver Gen 8) used USB sticks to boot from for years. No problem, not many boot cycles when used weekly. Now it was time to replace them with SSDs and upgrade them to the latest TrueNAS Version #truenas

2x EliteDesk 800s - both running Proxmox VE. They're in a cluster with some degree of HA failover. Top one is Razor and the bottom one is T-Bone (yes, SWAT Kats).
1x HPE Proliant Microserver Gen10+ which runs TrueNAS Scale. 16TB storage for Plex and Backups.

I was gifted this 4 Drive HP Microserver yesterday, wondering what to do with it: I'm thinking I may have it as a dedicated retro Nas, with file shares for multiple old operating systems, setup in a RAID array. Not sure yet though.

since now my HP Z640 home server is purely a NAS thing now, i'm looking into ways to replace it with something more compact
i was looking into MicroServer Gen 8 and i think it would actually consume more power at idle than my Z640 consumes now :/

I've got an HPE Microserver doing about this duty now, and it works and is well-designed, but it's CPU (an older Opteron) is woefully underpowered and doesn't help much with video transcoding.
I'm curious to see how it works out.

I've got an HPE Microserver doing about this duty now, and it works and is well-designed, but it's CPU (an older Opteron) is woefully underpowered and doesn't help much with video transcoding.

Už mě přestaly bavit reklamy na internetu, tak jsem rozjel Pi-hole. První node běží na Raspberry Pi Zero 2W a dcerka to měla jako projekt. Druhý v rámci redundance mi běží jako virtuální Debian na HP Microserver Gen 8 na VMware ESX. Už si můžu říkat geek? 😁

Decided to return to sanity and install Ubuntu Server 24.04 on my HP MicroServer Gen8 instead of Windows Server 2025 -- and with any luck I'll have it properly configured to boot from the SD card and run Ubuntu on the SSD!
