Finally got around to drawing Ypsilonigaster tiger! Jose Fernandez from the CNC approved, so that's nice! I literally have 6 wasps to go, and I'm finished! #Ypsilonigastertiger #Microgastrinae

According to the tracker, the >10,000 Ugandan Microgastrinae wasps have arrived at destination in Canada! (recipient still to confirm)

2999 species known globally. I think we can raise that number by quite a bit. 🧪

Thousands of Ugandan Microgastrinae wasps soon on the way to Canada. Modern technology is great, not a chance I'd care to write down what tubes are going instead of scanning! 🧪

I've started occasionally lifting Microgastrinae wasps by the wings instead of the legs. YOLO etc.

- It's a male.
- I give up in advance.
- Testing to key it to genus anyhow.
- End up in conflicting results and blind alleys.
- I give up again.

Microgaster godzilla is a parasitic wasp that dives underwater to find its caterpillar host!

You can read about it here:

And watch a video of it in action here:

Microgaster godzilla (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Microgastrinae), an unusual new species from Japan which dives underwater to parasitize its caterpillar host (Lepidoptera, Crambidae, Acentropinae)
A new species of Microgastrinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitoid wasp, Microgaster godzilla Fernandez-Triana & Kamino, is described from Japan. From a biological and morphological perspective ...

Vibes wise I’d guess Microgastrinae but I have no evidence for or against this

Just uploaded 2700 more Ugandan Microgastrinae wasps to the database. 🥳 🧪

That was the last of the previous batch I sent to Canada. Now for the second, larger batch (>75%).

I haven't even got halway through this Ugandan sample, and the Microgastrinae tube is looking like this. Must be hundreds of these wasps in this one sample.🧪

Cocoons of a braconid wasp, subfamily Microgastrinae. Maybe Microplitis? I’ll look up a potential name later!

(Enää tunteja aikaa, miksi roikun täällä netissä, no koska enää tunteja aikaa -stressi..)

🟣Many women contribute to the future of taxonomy.

Meet Amelie Höcherl, an early-career taxonomist working on parasitoid wasps (Microgastrinae) and recently involved in the description of a new species from the German Alps: Illidops oroseira

I was not certain. However Mark says 'cocoons are of a Microgastrinae (Braconidae). The black pupae within are Eulophidae hyperparasitoids (probably pseudohyperparasitoids, ie attacking the primary parasitoid after it has made cocoons). Maybe subfamily Eulophinae, other possibilities (Entedontinae)

Not all of the rescued Brown Argus larvae made it to pupation. These tiny cocoons, found on the underside of a Geranium leaf, indicated some had been parasitized. Less than 10 days later several Cotesia astrarches, a known parasitoid of the butterfly emerged.

Ooh, difficult question! There are at least a few dozen species in there. Of which I'd guess at least 2/3 new. (Microgastrinae are so small they're really poorly known)

So perhaps 20-40 new species? But I may be out by a lot.

I think at least some Microgastrinae typically form their cocoons away from host remains, Cotesia sp's, so maybe its possible some Chalcid do similarly?
