First: the nervous system.
They used microneurography—a tiny needle in the nerve—to measure sympathetic activity.

Long COVID patients had 77% more nerve bursts than controls. That's fight-or-flight mode, stuck on.

King’s College Hospital studied 36 long COVID patients and found 89% had small nerve fiber dysfunction.

Many showed abnormal pain signaling and faulty autonomic nerves, pointing to nerve damage as a key driver of symptoms.

Preprint alert: Using human microneurography protocols in PatchSeq experiments on pig DRGs we identify the molecular identity of human dermal CMi-fibers (sleeping nociceptors). We provide an integrated pig-human-more transcriptomic atlas and identify OSMR and SST as marker, backed by human expts.

Wonderful and thought provoking for my clinical work! Does your lab have capacity for PNS measures as well? Microneurography, for example?

I have not yet seen a mechanistic study of the decrease in blood pressure that occurs in most people with repeated measurements a minute apart

I wonder if people who do microneurography studies have simply measured BP a few times during one of their studies

In fact, the recent Nature Neuro. study Yu et al 2024 (from the labs of Wenqin Luo, Patrick Ernfors, and Håkan Olausson) with single-unit microneurography recordings in humans showed that C-LTMR DRG touch neurons respond to both soft brush and noxious heat ramps.

Or is the question whether you can really relate single unit microneurography recordings to actual function? That’s something I ask myself in all my experiments.
