if I was designing a microprocessor I would simply design it to not pull so much voltage it welds itself to death

tired: it’s a supercycle on the scale of microprocessors

wired: it’s a supercycle that dwarfs the microprocessor

Ahead of schedule, I'm very pleased to announced that @techinsightsinc.bsky.social is syndicating Microprocessor Report (that's what I write) publicly:

Okay, you definitely do not know what a microprocessor is.

The silicon microprocessor computer chip, the backbone of modern life, is about to leave the consumer marketplace. We are not prepared for the end of personal computing.
I understand framing the AI bubble RAM supply crisis in terms of stuff like video game consoles because nerds can conceptualize that but the framing does really undersell the sheer magnitude of how it's going to fuck up everything that even touches a computer.

this one is a bit like calling the game against the microprocessor circa 1976
Talk to the people who would use this for dream use cases — the cancer scientists, the people who want to make material goods out of it — and they will tell you it’s either a marginally useful if unreliable trick or completely useless. It has produced 0% of the utopian products promised.

i dislike accusations of luddism thrown at AI critics because i clearly like technology a lot! i use ~4 different computers regularly, i adore my 3D printer, i don't even brew coffee without involving a microprocessor. but all those technologies have proven themselves useful or at least entertaining
