This was the first scary movie I saw as a kid and I don't think I slept for a week after. A few years later I saw Day of the Triffids also based on a book by John Wyndham and lost another weeks sleep. Many years later I read The Midwhich Cuckoos the book on which Village of the Damded was based.

The problem with The Midwhich Cukoos is that it's a story about this horrific mass rape of women, told entirely from the POV of men.

This remake of the 60s film does try to counter than a bit by turning the main investigator into a woman, but it never quite works.

when I was a kid these were 2 of the scariest goddamn movies
the midwhich cuckoos from Village of the Damned (1960) a group of identical blonde haired ethereal children in english dress the Morlocks from The Time Machine (1960) an underground dwelling filled with blue-ish skinned ape-like monster men drapped in white hair with glowing eyes and disfigured teeth

It is.

I very much recommend it, it's gentle scifi horror like the Midwhich coocoos crossed with the pod people and little shop of horrors.

The alien plant person doesn't scare me, the description of climate change how ever

That's the cover I always think of when I think "Midwhich Cuckoo's". Its a fantastic piece.

Oddly, when I was in school, it was assigned in English as one of the books we read. Its reputation must have started to grown by the mid 80s, or at least have become acceptable.

This got way to lengthy to be a reasonable thread but my thoughts on the first VHD book ( Desire/temptation/Shane/Doris&D ) Sorry if it's hard to understand or all over the place - I simply have too many thoughts🤣 Also forgive all the typos, I miss them too easily 🥲🥹💖( I'm not smart, my bad😭)
1 - I just like hearing my own thoughts at this point hahaah🥹💀but also you're free to tell me your opinions on the matter and chat with me 🥹 My thoughts aren't set in stone and I like hearing what other people think... But anyways I see how people are quick to say that D doesn't hold romantic feelings towards Doris but even if that's true ( & I'm not here to argue that ) - it's definetly made clear that there's a physical desire. Doris throughout the entire story is made a symbol of it, it's the plot of the book boiled down. I don't think you should ignore too that D represents carnal desire, as divine as he is - he's a walking symbol of both sin and virtue. ...You can't really go through any vampire media without there being that correlation of drinking blood = desire/sex . Then Doris is the only person he's been close to biting without the presence of already spilled blood/previous intoxication. ( From all that I've read at this moment) D simply wouldn't have kissed Doris if he didn't want to, and it would have gone further if they weren't interrupted. ( the manner he does it doesn't scream " let me get this over with so that she leaves me alone finally" ). You don't need love for 2 people to decide to share a moment of mutual pleasure, escape reality for a moment. But then an even harsher reality than before came crashing down before that escapist dream they were about to partipate in could be cemented. It was also the calm before a storm that could lead to any possible outcome for them. It's an appreciation of the present and putting aside the uncertainity of the future. Act now or forever live with regret of what could have been. Even if it was just a kiss they shared - I think that dream was met to it's bare minimum. 2 -To continue with those themes of desire/temptation - It can be said that D both fell into temptation and overcame desire with the Midwich medusa's. It's the only ever being that's been bitten by him ( from what I've read so far ) and the whole point of the midwhich medusas is to be a parallel of the Brides of Dracula. They end the lives of everyone who falls into temptation and this it was a role-reversal - D lead them to their death. But it can be said how D vehemently refuses to bite others but did so in this case. It's shown that yes, D isn't immune into fulfilling that physical desire, D doesn't have the perfect infallibility/stubborness of the nobility - his human side is just as strong as the noble. Don't get me wrong I totally see and understand why people consider D ace. but I feel like it diminishes his struggle, the self-imposed solitude due to his conflicted feelings of his dhampir nature. It's a active, purposeful attitude on top of so that he doesn't get distracted from his goals. I'd say he's Aro at most and not ace, overcoming desire ( physical/sexual in this case ) is too much of a core theme for D. Additionally, it pushes that idea that by putting down temporary pleasures you become more saintly and closer to divinity. He could take his blood pills more often twice a day instead of every two weeks, but he chooses not to. In D's mind it allows him gratification of being above a pleasure. ( I could go on too with eating disorders/control but that's for another time ) 3 - Is it people conflating romantic and sexual attraction? maybe, idk, not the judge of that. Self-explanatory - People kinda forgetting that D exists in a body of young man in peak health and physical prime lolololol [Nature will have it's way]. Also D is very heavily inspired by Shane ( SPOILER - Shane and Marian have very much something going on between them and, similarly to D and Doris, don't get to consumate those feelings [ If anything it's more explicit in the latter since Shane and Marian don't even get a kiss). Might as well mention it but D biting the Medusas can also be a call back to how Shane picks up a gun again after disavowing to even carry a gun. It's all so blatant and coded into the text? Why deny what was very much clearly intented by Kikuchi? 💀 btw miss me with that " it's only for the female readers " bs he said, he still thought it and wrote it. VHD vol. 1 is a fanfic of Shane with his sci-fi/post-apocalyptic ocs with Dracula injected into every little crevice. Goddamn it, I need to get around to also doing a Shane deep-dive.
