The letter states that the province has no authority to supersede treaties. Last sentence: "If your or any Canadians are not happy living on Treaty lands, they are free to apply for citizenship elsewhere."

MIKISEW CREE FIRST NATION Treaty 8 Sovereignty—Mikisew Cree First Nation Rejects U.S. Annexation of Canada March 3, 2025 Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN) is a sovereign Treaty 8 Nation. Our land, our rights, and our jurisdiction are not up for debate. Treaty 8 is a binding nation-to-nation agreement between First Nations and the Crown, carrying legal and constitutional significance that Canada is obligated to uphold. We will not allow our treaty, our people, or our lands to be compromised by any notion that Canada, or any part of our traditional territories, could become the 51st state of the United States. Canada exists because of treaties. Treaty 8, signed in 1899, was an agreement between our Nations and the Crown, ensuring that our lands and sovereignty would be respected. Any suggestion of U.S. annexation is a direct violation of that treaty, international law, and the fundamental principles of Indigenous and Treaty rights. Let it be absolutely clear, we will not allow Canada to be absorbed into another nation, nor will we tolerate any discussion that threatens the integrity of our treaty or our rightful place in this land. We expect all levels of government to uphold their treaty obligations and reject any suggestion of external interference in our affairs.
