New research on Mimulus guttatus in Oregon shows that strong local adaptation can occur at microgeographic scales despite ongoing gene flow. Traits like flowering time and flower size differ between nearby populations, driven by past selection and environmental variation.

New preprint out of the lab natural variation in pollen heat susceptibility in Mimulus. Key finding: An restricted alpine endemic species, Mimulus tilingii, has universally high pollen susceptibility, while the widespread M. guttatus is much more variable. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Heat stress reveals divergent pollen viability responses across species and populations of monkeyflower
Premise Rising temperatures can reduce plant reproductive success by disrupting pollen development, yet little is known about how reproductive heat sensitivity varies among natural populations. We eva...

Authors published a paper in Biorxiv, they used Whole Genome Shotgun in the study. Including #RRIDs will make this less ambiguous.

New preprint out from my time as a postdoc in @jenncoughlan.bsky.social lab!

In a range-wide survey of M. guttatus, we found a lack of stomatal regulation in response to drought, which led to our inability to draw predictions from other known trait-associations

Divergence in wilt tolerance across the range of Mimulus guttatus in the absence of stomatal regulation
Whether phenotypes and environments predict performance under stress is central to ecology and evolution and can reveal species' vulnerability to global change. We sampled Mimulus guttatus range-wide ...

Through phenotyping a range wide collection of Mimulus guttatus we find that a lot of physiological, morphological, and phenological traits that we typically measure in the greenhouse did not predict performance under drought stress. 2/n

I think I can handle Mimulus. But Paulownia in Orobanchaceae feels really, really weird... 😅

Wow. Mimulus was in the Phrymaceae.
Now in the Orobanchaceae.
I'm okay with that.

Range edge populations often face novel conditions. Across the range of Mimulus cardinalis, we found trailing-edge populations have the most flowering-time plasticity. Plasticity evolved after extreme drought, though adaptive benefits varied by trait:
