A major mining disaster in China’s Shanxi province has killed at least 82 people after an explosion tore through the Liushenyu mine shaft, making it the country’s deadliest mining accident since 2009. At the time of the blast, 247 workers were underground. Emergency crews, medical teams and rescue workers were deployed to the site, while two miners were still reported missing as authorities continued overnight search operations. Survivor Wang Yong described the chaotic moments after the explosion, saying he initially heard no loud noise but quickly noticed a cloud of smoke and a strong sulphur smell similar to firecrackers. He shouted for fellow miners to run as smoke spread through the shaft. Wang later regained consciousness after fainting and managed to help another worker escape. Chinese authorities have launched an official investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggested the mining company had committed serious safety violations, and at least one company representative has reportedly been detained. China’s State Council also ordered nationwide crackdowns on illegal mining practices, including falsified safety records and failures to properly account for underground workers. The disaster has deeply affected residents of Qinyuan county, where coal mining remains a major source of employment despite ongoing safety concerns. Local business owners and residents expressed sympathy for the families of the victims, noting that many miners were primary breadwinners supporting both children and elderly parents. Although mining safety standards in China have improved over recent decades, serious accidents still occur due to weak enforcement, poor oversight and dangerous working conditions in parts of the coal industry.
