Could an ancient ape fossil in Egypt rewrite the story of human origins?

A new genus (Masripithecus) from the Early Miocene (~17 to 18 million years) of northern Egypt

Climate doesn't happen in isolation. Case in point, the Miocene aridification of North Africa and the intensification of the South Asian Monsoon were actually connected processes. 🧪

Beware this spooky season...these Andean plants might suck your blood...

Evolving in the Miocene, Dracula orchids are pretty ancient (figures). Yet, they've been found to have a recent & complex biogeographical history...eternal youth perhaps? Find out here buff.ly/w0i4P8p! 🦇🧪👇

These ghost bats (Macroderma gigas) are ghosts in another way:

They're phylogenetic relicts whose lineage traces back to radiations in the Miocene & Pliocene. Their closest living relatives are in India & we know they once ranged across Australia.

Now you know about some ghost bats! 🎃

Today an elaphant and maybe a miocene moropus..?

I really like Gomphotheres, drawing the Chalicotheres was fun as well. #paleoart #elephant #sciart #miocene #digitalart #paleontology

Though the Elderfolk are eternal, the rest of the flora and fauna is not, with a cutoff in the late Miocene, 8 million year ago, for anything not a hominin. But evolution has continued here in the Enclosure. It's not just Elderfolk who get a second chance. 🧵 1/3

Hello, friends and #OctoberWorldbuilders! Today is a super open-answer day: What's something unique or special about your world? I don't mean it has to be something that has NEVER been done before, but maybe it's more rare than the usual tropes. Something that sets your work apart from many others.

It took about 15 million years for the ecosystem to go from the 450-500 ppm of CO2 in the Miocene to the preindustrial concentration of about 280 ppm. If we find ourselves in the Miocene, we’ll be stuck there for at least a few million years.

Welcome to the Miocene. Will We Survive?
The increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has unbalanced the Earth system to the point that it is now how it was 10-20 million years ago, during the Miocene period.

A quick exercise in tracing soft tissue over an extinct mammal’s skull, here using Syndyoceras cooki, one of many very strange ungulates in the family Protoceratidae. It is unknown if they are closer to ruminants or camels, and their nasal openings are weird. #cenozoic #miocene #prehistoric #sketch

I should really do more paleoart, I love coloring speculative patterns on these guys (especially obscure ones)
