PEOPLE: - Hayao Miyazaki, age 51. Co-Founder of Studio Ghibli. Director of films like My Neighbor Totoro and Nausicaä . - Shigeru Miyamoto, age 39. Creator of Zelda & Mario. Producer of Nintendo EAD’s Software Development Department.. QUOTE: Miyazaki: I didn’t know much about video games but [there is] a game I wanted to create… … It takes place when the Japanese forces were nearly wiped out by the US in the South Pacific Ocean. The objective of this game is to board a torpedo bomber and hit a US aircraft carrier with a torpedo. That said, you can also choose not to get on a bomber. Then what will you do? Maybe you grow vegetables on an island to sustain yourself. Maybe you starve and eventually the war ends. Or maybe you become a prisoner of war and stay in a prison camp until the war is over… or maybe you die during the process. Miyamoto: I see. Miyzaki: So there are many choices you can make. … We would make these animated scenes and you need to choose your action [with a time limit]. I discussed making such a game. Miyamoto: I see…

Miyazaki & Miyamoto on the differing potential of movies vs video games, 1992.

PEOPLE: - Hayao Miyazaki, age 51. Studio Ghibli co-founder, Director of Nausicaä, Laputa, and more. - Shigeru Miyamoto, age 39. Creator of Zelda, Mario, & more. Producer of Nintendo EAD’s Software Development Department. QUOTE: Miyazaki: I think there is a fundamental difference between video games and dramas. If it's a drama, characters don't necessarily choose a correct path. They often try to do something impossible even if they know there's no chance, but then something happens and they somehow make it. In a way, making a drama is how to make up a good, convincing lie. ... In a way, movies are more diverse than video games. Miyamoto: I see it differently. I believe that the current games are something like what you just described. But if we could push the limits of computers or CD-ROMs, maybe we can make movie-like games in the future.

Producer of Nintendo EAD’s Software Development Department.. QUOTE: Miyazaki: …I would construct a vague image of the house in my head beforehand. Then I start to draw it from the front door’s perspective. … But for dramatic impact, sometimes we need to draw the house from an unexpected angle, such as the back of the house [laughs]. Miyamoto: If you use the current technology, you won’t need a human’s touch to draw things anymore. … A game called The 7th Guest will be released this fall. The developers bought an old house and scanned the [it] to render it as 3D graphics data. Once you have the graphics data, you just need to use it with a computer. If you want to go upstairs, you just can. You can see the results pretty quickly, because unlike animation, you won’t need to draw wherever you go.

QUOTE: Kotabe: ... a certain production company contacted Mr. Takahata, Miya-san [Miyazaki] and I about adapting [Pippi Longstocking]. ... I really wanted to make that animation, so I shook off my fetters and took flight. That was all fine and dandy, but then the original author didn't give the OK. It was quite a jam. That project was the whole reason we'd left [Toei], and now it was dead in the water. … If we quit Tokyo Movie, too, and moved on, it would be our third company. But if we could be certain Mr. Takahata would be able to direct something there, Miya-san and I said we would follow. That led to Heidi.

Co-founder of Studio Ghibli. - Satoru Iwata, age 48. President of Nintendo. QUOTE: Kotabe: [Miyazaki] came up to me and asked if I could help him out. I agreed without giving it much thought. … Remember the scene [in Nausicaä] where the tentacles reach out? Miya-san had drawn some layouts, and I was to trace those to create the key frames, but it kept turning out lifeless and ruined. So for the first frame of the tentacles I just used the layout itself. When I saw the finished movie and what an important scene it was, I was shocked. Iwata: I heard Miyazaki-san said you got mad at him. [laughs] Kotabe: Of course! It's such an important scene, but he didn't even show me all the storyboards!
