I agree. I've been using and critiquing these types of models all my scientific career (15+ years) and I'm still surprised in formal settings: it's possible people who still don't know what matrix multiplication is & does are claiming *we* don't understand these models enough to talk about them. 🧵

Honestly, I think anyone in the academy who is excited about using "AI" to do their work should leave and make room for people who actually are interested in actually creating and sharing knowledge.

We can’t let thinking of that level of depth disappear, and sorry but fuck the AI corporate invasion of academic work. I got into this racket to take my mind into new places, and to try to develop a novel perspective to solve problems. No one is allowed to simulate my experience of thought for me.

This argument for AI training on copyright material is an interesting one because opposite could be argued: if AI needs these materials and it's a matter of national security, why aren't companies paying? Also training models here isn't a condition for access to frontier models
