Maternal health remains a critical global issue, with around 800 preventable pregnancy-related deaths occurring daily in 20201. The third United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets a maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of under 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. However, the current MMR in South Africa (SA) of 127 per 100,000 highlights persistent challenges2. While early progress towards SDG 3 was substantial, recent reductions in maternal mortality have stalled, underscoring persistent gaps in maternal healthcare access and quality1. Barriers such as limited health information access, delayed care seeking and uneven antenatal care (ANC) attendance persist across SA3,4. The reliance on a resource-strained public healthcare system exacerbates these disparities, with socioeconomic and geographic inequalities limiting access to quality care5. These inequities are mirrored across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where regions with lower socioeconomic status experience higher maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Wealth and education disparities further underscore the need for strategies addressing both health and social determinants6,7. Despite global efforts to reduce inequalities, progress remains uneven, widening gaps in healthcare access8,9. Expanding access to technology in SSA offers opportunities to bridge these gaps.
