Did you know The Nahua (Aztecs) called the wild turkey “huehxōlōtl” and the domesticated turkey “tōtolin”.
North American Native Americans had various names.
Powhatan (Virginia): Monanow
Delaware: Tshikenum
Algonkian (Long Island): Nahiam
Cherokee: Gvna, which means "kernels" shrug ?
and so on

Depends on which language. The Mayans were probably the first to domesticate turkeys, and called them úulum. But the wild (ocellated) turkeys were called kuutz. The Powhatan that may have been the first to introduce white people to turkeys called them monanow.

A cool question on reddit: raccoon and squash come from Native American languages. How a bird "turkey" could have been called in English, had we loaned it as well?
