Indigenous women bring leadership, creativity & joy to clean water action (commentary)
On Indigenous Peoples Day, let’s honor the leadership and contributions of Indigenous women in water. Women – and particularly Indigenous women – are underrepresented in the water workforce and make up less than one in three voices in water governance. Yet, the water sector has much to learn from women’s leadership. Women have always led, and women get things done. Across the water community, women bring people together, build partnerships, solve problems, and move important work forward every day. Their leadership takes many forms. Some lead through community engagement and relationship building. Others advance technical solutions, policy, research, infrastructure, public health, or education. Many do all of these things at once. Different perspectives help turn vision into action. Women lead in complementary ways, and that collaboration often drives meaningful progress. In working alongside Indigenous leaders such as Emma Robbins and Crystal Tulley-Cordova, I have seen how community knowledge, technical expertise, and relationship-building complement one another. Throughout this work, women continue to champion Indigenous knowledge, environmental stewardship, water justice, and community resilience. They advance conversations about water rights, water hauling, universal access to clean water, public health, policy, research, and infrastructure. They also recognize that solving water challenges requires more than...

Ganges river dolphins may synchronise their activity with time, tides and the moon
In the tidal waters of West Bengal’s Rupnarayan river, Ganges river dolphins live with constantly shifting water levels, currents and conditions. A new study in the river found that tide, time of day and lunar cycle influences when the dolphins were detected. Published in Aquatic Mammals, the month-long study examined the these parameters together in relation to acoustic detections (monitoring the animal by the sounds it makes) of Ganges river dolphins. At the study site, tides rise and fall twice a day with occasional tidal bores, causing large shifts in water levels and the currents, explains Gargi Roy Chowdhury, principal project associate at Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the first author of the study. “It is a human-modified landscape with intense motorised fishing, and industrialised lower reaches with the Kolaghat thermal power plant downstream of the study site. It holds a good population of dolphins,” she adds while noting that large vessel traffic is limited here. A river shaped by the tide The Rupnarayan is an 85-km-long tributary of the Hooghly, influenced by tides from the Bay of Bengal, about 220 km away. Its upper reaches have narrower channels, while the lower stretches are wider. The river also experiences...

Reclaiming nature's many delights through living fences [Book Review]
My neighbour in Gurugram has a hedge of roses and jasmines outside the brick wall of her house. Just before the rains it is fragrant with white jasmines and in the winter season there are clusters of small pink and white roses on the hedge. My house, also in Gurugram, has a hedgerow of hibiscus trees outside a brick and grill fencing. The trees are uneven and in the flowering season, which is almost round the year, there are red, orange and pink hibiscus flowers. Both the hedge and the hedgerow attract squirrels, butterflies and birds. I have seen bulbuls nesting in the thickest parts of the hedgerow. In the hot summer months, many people put earthen pots of water for birds and squirrels adjacent to the fencing or in courtyards. There were also chameleons, before Gurugram became highly urbanised. During the rainy season, I have also seen many snakes in the undergrowth. A few months ago, I spotted one in the tree fencing that separates my house and my sister’s. The adjoining tall and stately kanak champa (Pterospermum acerifolium) also in the fenced area, is home to many birds and bees, the latter occasionally building their honeycombs in them...
