Well do anything to avoid working on monographs!

polygraphs are just monographs that can't make up their minds

It's honestly incredibly funny how a 3 page long word document that outlines the rules for a HOI4 RP session is better at conveying Hirohito's culpability than multi-hundred page long scholarly monographs about Hirohito's life
Absolutely lost my shit at this co-op mode for Hearts of Iron, which you play as the Army, Navy, Emperor, and Government. All have their own win conditions aside the Government, which lost the game automatically in 1925.

in a crowded field this has to be one of the stupidest things ive read about LLMs and it astonishes me that this quote is from a humanist, a historian! by definition, what these tools cannot do is original novel research of the kind we do in monographs!

See also: reviews of scholarly monographs & edited volumes.
I’m seeing a lot of negative reviews on games along the lines of “this isn’t exactly what I wanted, even though it was exactly what was promised”.

I can’t overstate how much more joy you will have if you allow art to unfurl in front of you, instead of demanding it be what you imagine you want.

Bringing a trio of emotional support monographs on my research trip.

Last year the vast majority of my students chose to buy physical copies of the historical monographs I assigned even though they had the option to get digital versions which were often less expensive.

We didn't used to have autism, we just had military historians who wrote seven monographs on the same tactical engagement.

I wish I could teach a graduate seminar on archival research where I could assign novels in addition to monographs and academic articles.

It's an odd feeling when you hear that people study your work (Scarfolk) at university, even that it informs their own research, and is subsequently written about in academic articles and monographs.

Happy to see our analysis on scaling up temperature x nutrient interactions from populations to communities published in Ecological Monographs @esajournals.bsky.social! 📈
Ecologists recognize the importance of integrating across scales, yet our models often target specific scales. Our new paper presents models of population growth that scale up to explain community-level patterns, including interactions of temperature, light & nutrients. doi.org/10.1002/ecm....

Some good university press suggestions in this thread for publishing mini-monographs
Hey historians 🗃️: Do you know of presses that publish short books (around 30K words / 90 pages plus notes)? I have been working on an article project that could easily turn into an great micro-history of that length, but I'm not sure it would make it to the usual full 60-90K words...

As the weather gets cooler and spooky season approaches, don’t forget to get that costume ready.
