Gonimbrasia belina. Eine Schmetterlingsraupe die auf dem Mopane Baum lebt. Man muss auch lokale Speisen probieren. Sehr lecker übrigens. ☝🏼

It is a hot sunny day in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve in Northern Botswana, where Roan Antelope is calmly enjoying his leafy lunch under a Mopane tree. #PlantCarnage (Havemann et al 2022) #2026MMM

It’s that time of the year when our team at the @leibnizfli.bsky.social does field work in the Gonarezhou National Park. This year the rains came late and in large amounts, making it harder to find fish.
In the pics a beautiful spotted killifish and the typical butterfly-shaped mopane leaf.

I, for one, welcome our insect beer-snack overlords (fried Mopane worms from last week in Namibia).

I lived in Botswana for my childhood. A common food was fried mopane worms, which were caterpillars that ate mopane leaves (hence the name). Apparently quite good? I never had a chance to try them. So yeah, there are edible caterpillars out there.

A delicacy among Oshiwambo people in the southern African country of Namibia - which celebrates its independence day on 21 March - is Mopane worms, dried, cooked and fried caterpillars with vegetables. "Some have described Mopane worms as similar to a steak that has been burned." #foodsky 🍜🧵

We tasted mopane worms for the first time. They are a delicacy in Zimbabwe. They are really quite delicious.

Today I'm also reading about harvesting of the mopane worm: the caterpillar of an emperor moth that eats mopane leaves.

It's a major source of food in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe and seems very sustainable and nutritious.

Clever! I'd eat mopane worms, nice and crunchy.

Colleague from Botswana, knowing I can be an adventurous eater, has brought me back her favourite delicacy from a trip home: mopane worms (which I gather are actually a type of caterpillar). And, you know, I’m not squeamish about food or anything but even I might not manage with these!

Dear Reader: What’s the worst thing you’ve ever eaten? We have a “delicacy” here, amacimbi/madora/mopane worms—edible caterpillars of the emperor moth (Gonimbrasia belina) that you find on mopane/iphane tree leaves in a particular season. 💙📚

I had some mopane worms in Zimbabwe. The size reminded me of catalpa worms and the taste reminded of why I don’t eat them regularly. 😉

For day 15 of #ChemAdvent, the most tenuous connection so far.

Deep-fried caterpillars are a Christmas delicacy in South Africa, and tinsel... kind of looks like a giant sparkly festive caterpillar?

Yeah, it's a stretch.

For day 4 of #ChemAdvent we're heading to South Africa!

Deep-fried caterpillar is a Christmas speciality here and provides more protein and iron than beef!
