Mother Maria Skobtsova lived an extraordinary life, from childhood in Tsarist Russia through the Revolution to life in exile in Paris where she eventually became an Orthodox nun and where her efforts to save Jewish lives led to her martyrdom in Ravensbrueck concentration camp. She is venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox tradition and is recognised as a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. James Roberts, who is completing a DPhil on Mother Maria's theology, has written a short, accessible biography, which I have illustrated with miniature woodcuts and made into individually hand-constructed books. On the cover is an Orthodox cross in gold Fimo and inside the back cover is an envelope with an essay by James inside. Each book is individually numbered. James is one of my friends and on a walk around the University Parks we came up with the idea for an illustrated book about Mother Maria - which was a good project to keep us both going in lockdown 3!
