#Motonormitivity
He really is suffering from #motonormitivity the past few days.

Because what London really needs is lots more cars and especially empty ones cruising the streets.

I don't remember Londoners being consulted on being used as guinea pigs.

Of course, if this was an LTN project, you wouldn't be able to move for business cases or demands for monitoring or evidence.

It is very easy to mount a concerted campaign about one street feature that you can cynically get photos and edited videos of. It's entirely much more challenging to take on the wider issues.

Raio adverts for the forthcoming closure of #GallowsCorner by @london.gov.uk completely ignore walking, wheeling and cycling as alternatives during the work.

I think there is a wider societal problem of people with technical backgrounds making comments on subjects they know nothing about, while having an air of authority stemming from their adjacent credentials.

Of course, it's always roads isn't it.

The next series of @activetravelcaf.bsky.social starts on Tuesday and after @ianwalker.bsky.social talks about his latest motonormitivity research, I shall be rounding off the session looking at some Dutch hills.

The answer is in your question. Motonormitivity. In many situations, the signs are fine in the carriageway.

“Cycling campaigners are mostly counterproductive due to their rudeness.”

It's bananas. They are motonormitivity personified. Their idea of an accessible world is no cycling and more tactile paving.

Although, there is always the whiff of #motonormitivity

"But Sharon Graham, general secretary of the Unite union, which raised the concerns with The Standard, accused the council of “ripping off residents” over parking..."

Wondering if this actually makes parking lots so valuable thereby locking in car-centric planning.

“We can’t take these parking spots away. Where would people park AND what about all the energy we’ll lose?”

#motonormitivity
France passed a law requiring solar panels on every parking lot with more than 80 spaces.

Equals 10 nuclear reactors
Reduces heat island, shades cars

The US -- 800 million parking spaces. Most of them are uncovered asphalt sitting in direct sunlight.

Why aren't we doing this?

I guess that's #motonormitivity though. Side road junctions and footway parking are so common-place, nobody notices or realises there's a problem.

Dockless bikes and streets being upgraded to add safe cycling are still new and obvious which attracts the attention.

The UK's streets are terrible for walking and dominated by traffic, but it's really hard to mount a campaign around that because it pulls at motonormitivity. Rallying around a design feature is far easier.
June 27, 2025 at 6:51 AM
I'm not blaming anyone, motonormitivity transcends that!

Wellington friends - please go to understand motonormitivity and the way we just accept car priority and dependency... and why we shouldn't!
Oh, and if you're in New Zealand...

Classic #motonormitivity here from Essex County Council proud at providing nice smooth carriageways when the adjacent footway looks like this.

It's been looked at. This reporting is just motonormitivity in action.

There's a whole load of societal and political motonormitivity behind this and engineers will point at state issues guidance which absolutely has terrible layouts in them and that needs to change

A reminder of #motonormitivity mindset. This person posts her belief that people walking/cycling deserve to be harmed by drivers for their mode of transport.
This reply is in response to supporting a reduction in the speed limit from 30 to 20mph on some Cambridge roads. 🙂‍↕️ @camcitco.bsky.social

I'm not sure that's quite true as there are sometimes successful cases, but probably more a reflection of motonormitivity in society, although there is a counter to some extent that personal responsibility doesn't apply either.

It is a systemic problem that eats into the core of how our public services are funded and run.

With added motonormitivity.

We are told our roads are safer. But reductions in KSIs for active travellers correlate with reductions in active travel.

If you are an anti-fascist, you are against petroleum. Petroleum funds fascism globally. It is at the heart of the military industrial complex driving global imperialism, from both the US and Russia. Motonormitivity is fascist, both in it's elitist roots and in it's ties to historical fascism […]

Indeed, but we should not diminish the impact these two people and their followers had.

The UK has had lots of pockets of pretty good things being planned and designed, but a motonormitivity in society played a big part in this.

Luckily we are getting there more these days.
