And we end there! Thank you so much to all the panelists for a great roundtable! #MovingTexts2021

@deflatermaus has asked a question I missed (censorship?), but @Colleenlovesbks responds that it brings up whether reality tv reflects reality or affects it #MovingTexts2021

@superHH adds that the screaming blond lady juxtaposed with cat meme is a Real Housewife. And the recontextualization online by viewers showed that this really wasn't a good re-use because it makes light of domestic abuse #MovingTexts2021

Oooo @Marie_LSJ draws parallel to people cutting engravings/pictures out of prints/mss!!! (highly discouraged by your rare book librarians). But also trading woodblocks around so that they're used out of context! (I love this!) #MovingTexts2021

Behind now, @melusinagr "running anchor" on this roundtable! Laura is looking at the call and response between these shows and the public. Reality show on teenage pregnancy caused a significant reduction (5%) in teenage pregnancy in the US 18months post-show #MovingTexts2021

These readers' texts have affected future seasons of the show! Okay, so this is definitely a strong case for the interaction of book history and reality tv here. So Darnton! #MovingTexts2021

Ghost writers estimate 4-6 week turnaround for writing a book "by" a reality TV star. There's also a wide variety of genres available to stars. They aren't limited to what genre they publish in. #MovingTexts2021

Real housewives write books, and especially books about each other. Contracts often specify that participants can't sue each other. Books are their way of getting back at each other. Such early modern Spain vibes of countersueing here for me! #MovingTexts2021
November 12, 2024 at 3:06 PM
Moving now to @superHH's part, we're going into the Real Housewives!! "Any text present in the Real Housewives universe only makes sense in the production context" #MovingTexts2021

@superHH brings up that Netflix and other platforms are playing more with seriality now versus releasing a whole series at once! I wonder how Netflix et al. decides between these release methods. Is there a correlation to genre, age group, etc.? #MovingTexts2021

Also getting into here a bit about how mediated media is now. You need a VHS or a DVD player if not streaming. How many people still have DVD players (or blu-ray!)? This tweeter still has a VHS at home to be able to watch certain VHS tapes! #MovingTexts2021

Finally, Ben Fried talks about Creative Reading & the 20th c. Literary Editor. Editors are “the stage managers” of literature. In an ex. from the New Yorker, a writer’s series of stories stopped mid-sequence due to a change in editors, one sympathetic & one not #MovingTexts2021

Now @LKFiss! Laura is looking at the creative reading in The Idler’s Club magazine. These include processes like selection of texts and copy-editing and the humor found within! #MovingTexts2021

So is the viewing method a paratext? The whole platform of Netflix a paratext? What about ads that run before/after shows? #MovingTexts2021

But in tracing these sources, @sarahebull comes to an issue: mult. books use these excerpts! Which was the source the book-maker of Manhood used?? Sarah, I feel your pain when tracing Isaac Newton’s sources! #MovingTexts2021

Colleen talks about the difference in objects available. 9 seasons on Netflix, 5 available (legally in physical copies). So viewer agency is limited. #MovingTexts2021
November 12, 2024 at 1:40 PM
For ex. the book Manhood on men’s health was excerpted from many sources with original writing to “smooth over the cracks” while the book is presented as wholely original. #MovingTexts2021
November 12, 2024 at 1:40 PM
The D.F. McKenzie quote that books “are invariably the product of human agency” has been highlighted by both presenters. I immediately wrote down the page number (4) in Sociology of Texts bc I think it’ll be the perfect quote to bring into my revised USTC paper! #MovingTexts2021
November 12, 2024 at 1:29 PM
@Colleenlovesbks talking now about reality tv as object. Original proposal was meant to think about how viewing mechanisms affect use experience, but that was too big. Ergo, case study! And with the best show: Great British Bake off! #MovingTexts2021
November 12, 2024 at 1:29 PM
Now @sarahebull talks about “book-making”, which was associated with compilation in the 19th c. Book-making was a negatively viewed process which took excerpts to make low quality books or bulk up others. #MovingTexts2021

Personal highlight of the talk was the comparison of Jet to Ebony in size. Size is so incredibly crucial to understanding use and reception or how a text can become a "mobilizing text" #MovingTexts2021
November 12, 2024 at 1:17 PM
Okay, the comparison of Richard Scarry books to Comenius' Orbis Sensualium Pictum by Alan Galey is golden. (here's my bilingual edition for reference!) #MovingTexts2021
