The specific combination of Quake and MPlayer is deep in the weird-to-do end of the pool. If you had a dialup connection MPlayer was the worst way to run it, and dialup players' disavantage was magnified. That's not fun for high-level players, but it is fun for dicks with access to a T1.

Carter was in EP S4E2 (2000). He was at MPlayer and a big supporter of our show in the early years. We lost this legend today. I’ll miss him forever.
It hurts my heart that EP isn’t visiting studios now. People that make the game biz go, like Carter Lipscomb, deserve to be known & celebrated. ❤️

I remember using Trillian because it had just about every protocol in one program, before the different messenger services shut down
ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Skype
it also had others like Jabber, Facebook Messenger
Mplayer/HearMe, Roger Wilco, Ventrilo, and TeamSpeak were VOIP before Discord

If you're gen x or millennial, odds are you have known some people online for *decades*. Across multiple now-dead forums, across vast gulfs of time in internet years. You've probably got a friend group that outlived multiple sites.

Matchmaking, for the majority on dialup, wasn't useful. Dialup users were massively incentivized to find a server near their home to get their ping down to ~240 ms, the best they could generally expect. GameSpy would give you a list you could sort by ping. MPlayer just gave you opponents.

virtually every non-VLC media player at this point is an mplayer derivative instead, including mpv. whether or not a given mplayer derivative is specifically in the mpv lineage is kind of immaterial (iirc IINA is, but IINA is pegged to a relatively older mpv so you can’t assume upstream features)

I really avoid mplayer these days and I feel a bit stupid for it sometimes but I know stuff like that can just ruin my whole evening.
