Peristiwa tersebut terjadi pada masa pemerintahan Khalifah Yazid bin Muawiyah. Saat itu, Abdullah bin Az-Zubair yang berada di Makkah menolak mengakui kekhalifahan Yazid, dan menjadi salah satu tokoh oposisi terhadap pemerintahan Bani Umayyah yang berpusat di Syam.
