#Multidrug-resistant
THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at the University of Illinois have developed a new antibiotic that reduced or eliminated drug-resistant bacterial infections (MORE THAN 130 multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, in fact) while sparing the gut microbiome!

Let’s talk about that! 🧪🧵⬇️

Researchers have found that multidrug-resistant bacteria from hospitals are also highly resistant to the common herbicide glyphosate. The study sparks concerns that exposure to the common chemical could be allowing drug-resistant bacteria to thrive.

Time for a history lesson from your favorite public health nerds 🤓

After the USSR collapsed, Tuberculosis (TB) surged—especially in prisons. Treatment crumbled. Drug supplies dried up.

The result? A catastrophic outbreak of drug-resistant TB.
Prisons in Post-Soviet Russia Incubate a Plague
The collapse of the Soviet health care system in the 1990s coupled with prisons releasing improperly treated inmates and endemic poverty escalated incidences of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis to epi...

Merck discontinues imipenem-cilastatin plus relebactam, a combination agent primarily used to target multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Apparently Merck is no longer supplying Recarbrio. “In an unexpected move, Merck discontinued an important antibiotic from the U.S. market earlier this month, underscoring concerns about the commitment large pharmaceutical companies are willing to make to a field that is crucial to public health”

Next, researchers evaluated how well lolamicin worked against the multi-drug-resistant clinical isolates. They found that “Lolamicin has activity against a panel of more than 130 multidrug-resistant clinical isolates,” so the drug showed great promise as an effective antibiotic.

Ita already pretty bad and in the wild already. Completely controllable with antibiotics - but of you weaponozed it to be multidrug resistant - yeah. Black death all over again. WTF.

Antibiotic resistance: it's complicated.
This study compared the prevalence of resistant E. coli strains to antibiotic use in UK and Norway. The relationship is there, but less clear than one would expect.
The researchers think that it's b/c of non-resistant strains outcompeting resistant strains.

Hantavirus is no joke. A friend I was visiting in Nevada had just spring cleaned a shed on her ranch and complained about feeling a little ill. We said goodbye. Three days later she was dead.
(AFP) - Three people have died on a cruise ship in the Atlantic, the WHO said Sunday, one a confirmed case of hantavirus -- an illness usually transmitted to humans from rodents.
