All poetic forms come from somewhere, but figuring out their relationships is hard.
We use sequence alignment on scansion (010.10) to measure metrical similarity between poems. This allows us to detect related forms across languages and times 1/

Last week's assignment was to create a data set from your life, but Celine Heck took it a step further and embroidered it too! This is her caffeinated beverage intake for the week. Chinese was easier than Latin for embroidering the labels, a #MultilingualDH win on top of it all! #DHmakes

NotebookLM translates any language (I tested Norwegian, African American Vernacular English, and early 1800s English) to 21st century Standard American English in a midwest accent, and the cultural context is either exoticised or ignored, with puns and local context lost and US assumptions added.

My first attempt to learn Python (in library school) was under Python 2, and it was beyond frustrating that the data I wanted to work with (Cyrillic) involved all kinds of elaborate workarounds to not get mangled from the start. I gave up for nearly a decade. #MultilingualDH
an example of why multicultural aspects are important even in very technical stuff like programming , is how Python 2.0 would become a fucking disaster if you typed anything in a non-Latin language and break itself into not even running

We had a group of grad students & faculty from the Spanish & Portuguese Department @skeuomorphpress.org today, & do had to do a little manual addition of accent marks (using sans-serif quotation marks) for their collaborative print

Props to Monika Dabrowska for saying at the top of her #ACH2024 presentation that she's most comfortable in Spanish and will be presenting in that language. The English slides are providing the highlights for folks who can't do Spanish. #MultilingualDH can be no big deal.
