Also known as Mumbet, was a nurse/midwife who sued Massachusetts for her freedom in 1781, becoming the 1st enslaved woman to win a freedom suit in the state. Her suit helped lead to the abolition of slavery in the state of MA.

Mumbet! There's a whole story of how free and enslaved Black residents, many in MA, quickly grabbed hold of the preamble language and used it to assert their rights to equal treatment (and to no taxation without voting rights). They understood it had depths that Jefferson probably didn't envision.
