Man, these are next level! The fact that these are "simply doodles" perplexes me more than anything. The way you handle anatomy and musclestructure just feels... I dunno, it just clicks with me.

Because they never went as furry as the original concept, most new designs leaned into the reptilian side with it. Toys kept the fur, but for the special editions and prequels, Terryl Whitlatch designed a great new furless version. Only with The Mandalorian did they do a new hairy CG design again.

It's also possible that Blizzard didn't like the way the back of the 3D model looked, so they didn't care if licensees mixed it up. The back of every hydralisk product is very different for example, so I assume it looked unfinished/had nothing connecting the carapace to the back on the real 3D model
A photo of the rear of the official hydralisk scale model kit, which has various inaccuracies to the original design, mainly around the musclestructure of the torso. Here the split of rear of the back carapace doesn't extend all the way up, in a way that doesn't match any other design. They also have invented some cool extra detail inside the frill. A photo of the 'series one' hydralisk action figure, in which the back vertebrae are on their own carapace plate that is completely disconnected from the 'ribcage,' and placed much higher up so that it runs into the back carapace without leaving a gap. A photo of the rear of the original '90s Hydralisk action figure as well as a prototype for an unproduced metal tabletop miniature from the early 2000s side by side. In both, there is a split in the rear carapace that extends all the way up to the top. The action figure sculptors seem to not have known what to put inside there, and just have an expanse of smooth plastic, while the metal figurine sculptor invented some structural details. A screenshot of a hydralisk being shot from the Battle on the Amerigo cinematic, in which you can partly see up under the gap between the back carapace and the torso, and it kind of suggests there is no connection there.
