Mexican artist Karla de Lara’s “The Last Thread” turns separation into something more complicated than rupture. The artist placed a Spanish-language text of her own beside the painting, making the written word an integral companion to the image. In it, she describes two souls recognizing themselves as independent and confronting memories, wounds, inherited affections, guilt, and patterns carried through generations. Separation requires returning to each other what does not belong to oneself while reclaiming one’s own limits, identity, and independence. That story illuminates the painting’s opposing realms. Two elongated women face one another within a fantastical architectural world divided between fire and night. At left, a red-haired figure rises from a dense landscape of rust, crimson, black, tangled branches, and glowing lanterns. At right, her pale, silver-haired counterpart stands amid moonlight, blue water, stars, columns, and delicate white flowers. Their outstretched hands nearly meet around a radiant sphere at the painting’s center. Gold-and-white tendrils spiral outward from it, visually binding their contrasting worlds. The women’s sweeping gowns echo the curling smoke, water, hair, and vines around them, while small cages, masks, celestial forms, and reflections create a dreamlike environment of confinement, memory, release, and transformation. The fiery figure and the luminous blue figure are not simply adversaries, but intertwined identities whose experiences have shaped one another. The glowing energy between the women is not a bond that must be violently severed, but one that can change form. Separating does not always mean losing one another because memory, learning, and “amar desde la libertad” can forge love from freedom. The painting speaks to me of boundaries and attachment across generations. Fire does not extinguish water, and night does not erase light. Instead, the two women remain connected at the very moment each becomes fully herself.

“Peacock” by Antonia Huerta aka Antonia Fernandez (American) - Oil on canvas / 2018 - Museo de las Americas (Denver, Colorado) #WomenInArt #WomensArt #WomanArtist #WomenArtists #AntoniaFernandez #AntoniaHuerta #BlueskyArt #arte #art #makeup #artText #artwork #MuseoDeLasAmericas #WomenPaintingWomen
A glamorous young woman with medium tan skin stands close to a vanity mirror, caught mid-gesture as she finishes her makeup. Her long hair is styled into high waves dyed a vivid magenta, and she wears large silver hoop earrings. Seen twice (from the side and in the mirror’s reflection), she lifts a hand to her lips, checking a bold, dark teal lipstick with steady concentration. She wears a deep burgundy bra as her skin almost glows under smooth, studio-like light. Across a countertop, makeup tools spread like a still life of brushes, pencils, mascara, compacts, and an open palette of bright colors. A black bra with bright pink interior hangs near the mirror frame. The room behind her is muted walls and clean trim so the ritual of self-styling becomes the scene’s main drama. Painted at a large scale and in crisp realism, “Peacock” treats getting ready as a serious act of authorship. The title hints at display, but this “peacocking” isn’t for an outside judge as it’s an insistence that self-presentation can be chosen, skilled, and joyful. The doubled view stages a negotiation between how the world looks at Chicana bodies and how a woman looks back. Shown in “Pachucos y Sirenas” at Denver’s Museo de las Americas (and later in the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Qué Chola in Albuquerque, New Mexico), the painting sits inside a longer history of pachuca/chola style as cultural pride and refusal of respectability politics. Artist Antonia Huerta (formerly exhibited as Antonia Fernandez) frames cosmetics not as disguise, but as craft do color, contour, and shine become a language for identity. As she says, “Feminity means different thigs to different women, and today every woman owns the right to interpret her place in the world and how she sees it fit.” In that light, the mirror in “Peacock” is less like a vanity than like a portal where a woman rehearses confidence, claims visibility on their own terms, and turns everyday beauty “labor” into a portrait of power.
