#BukitPeninsula stop 1: #MuseumPasifika. A great but not overwhelming art collection, by locals & overseas artists working here. Lovely building too but it’s not air-conditioned: the art’s suffering long term… Poured with rain while we were inside then cleared for our departure!

#MuseumPasifika #NusaDua Finally, my discovery was the early work of Theo Mayer, in Gaugin’s thrall but building something vigorous (his later work is large, colourful & flabby). Adrian Le Mayeur’s C20th Impressionism impressed, and Andre Maire’s linear approach is appealing.

#MuseumPasifika #NusaDua Tribal (and wannabes): A whole wall of Gaugin bronzes, however a whole room of amazing items from the Pacific including many from Vanuatu. And 1806 wallpaper designed by Jean Gabriel Charvet: ‘Savages of the Pacific’ (James Cook’s travels).

#MuseumPasifika #NusaDua Styles: Lèa Lafugie is stylishly Deco; a dreamy surrealism creeps in; Alex Aime is solidly reassuring. Vietnam has a strong showing with artists like Le Quoc Loc.

#MuseumPasifika #NusaDua The grand European masters’ influence: Raden Saleh as Delacroix? - here’s a real Rousseau. Czeslaw Mystkowaki as Gaugin? - here are some real Gaugins (plus a Matisse!). Jimmy Ong’s drawing is grand indeed; Miguel Covarrubias is decorative; Chen Zhen is dedicated.

#MuseumPasifika #NusaDua In the beautiful (non climate-controlled) building is a representative collection, starting with Indonesia: C19th Raden Saleh’s is amazing. Ex-pats are often ‘boobs or boys’: Rudolph Bonnet & Roland Strasser transcend; Donald Friend’s gorgeous work is firmly in the latter.
