#Mutability
A dense, rich piece on love, fear of loss, and the mutability of time.

Starlight remix compilation/mix is a perfect microcosm of just one slice of Juan's vast influence and a beautiful example of the mutability of techno itself, flowing seamlessly from the original Model 500 track through a series of reworks, reshapes, and dubs

while in the pre-agents Linux world the currently hot thing to do is to remove the shell and all mutability completely.

dont ask allies about the mutability of sex, bad bad idea…

“With his gleaming falsetto and rum-rich baritone, Costanzo tears up the heteronormative rulebook and uses it as confetti. This album is brilliantly organised. A brave whirlwind...embracing unboundedness and mutability, and refusing limits imposed on the voice altogether.”—Gramophone on Countertenor

Mutability is not the same as state, and all of those(except for loops, which you can very easily gloss over because they're kinda weird anyways) are perfectly easy to explain without the concept of mutability being introduced

The purpose of a variable is to assign a named identifier to a piece of data and reference it in multiple places. The advantage of that can be partially explained without touching mutability by having multiple things read the variable

i really like the amount of snark inherent in the phrase "interior mutability (i.e. mutability)"
October 25, 2026 at 11:12 AM
i mean, the equivalent of Cell is IORef, not STRef. rust does nothing to prevent interior mutability (i.e. mutability) from escaping

Bazzite is alright, but I needed mutability to install specific drivers, so I went with Nobara.

It's essentially Bazzite (Advanced)

I think the issue is for me is that mutability is where I first kinda... saw the beauty in programming. Being able to *change* things in an interactive way is so incredibly powerful, and it feels like something that everything else kinda depends on. Which just makes it feel weird to me to hide it

get ready to learn about interior mutability buddy
October 25, 2026 at 6:46 AM
i really dislike this purity argument, where having some kinds of restricted mutation preserving strong guarantees is the same as “doing almost nothing to restrict normal mutability”
October 25, 2026 at 12:12 PM
that's the part where they tell you that that bit about rust restricting mutation is actually completely wrong and rust does almost nothing to restrict normal mutability (which they call✨interior mutability✨) and rust just has a second mutation mechanism on top of that if you have a unique reference
October 25, 2026 at 10:41 AM
I'm trying to imagine how you would even teach programming without it. Variables? For loops? Conditionals? What are you even learning at the start then?

Genuine question because I can't think of how you'd do it without mutability near the start
November 2, 2026 at 7:47 AM
but it's exactly the same argument you're making, except that haskell people didn't invent terms like "interior mutability" for their IORefs.
October 25, 2026 at 12:38 PM
interior mutability really just does not get used that much, only in the implementations of certain data structures, and you still always have the guarantee that &mut T is unique for its lifetime
October 25, 2026 at 12:12 PM
it's genuinely upsetting to see these words next to that face. it really is.

you are not engaging with the material reality of the mutability of sex, & that's getting in the way of your understanding the broader issue.

the sex-gender split is harmful alone if you don't caveat that sex is mutable.
ok but AMAB is also not the same as being male.

sex is neither binary nor immutable. most socially meaningful aspects of biological sex can and do change with transition healthcare.

you're rocking the Celeste dp and talking like this about trans lives & trans bodies? hm. idk bestie
sex is a heuristic for describing human dimorphism around a polythetic set of traits with a bimodal distribution, many of which can and do vary over a lifetime.

selecting 'Sex At Birth' as the sole determinant of 'Biological Sex' in law as the UK has done is ideological, not scientific.

except it has a little more to stand on, cause internal mutability is harder to grep for and review whereas unsafe actually has a keyword
October 25, 2026 at 12:22 PM
I mean you can explain them, but there's no clear point to any of them until you introduce mutability. Why use a variable instead of just putting a number in the code where it's checked? Why put an if statement here if it always goes one way? Why do any of this if nothing changes?
November 2, 2026 at 7:53 AM
i'd say that it feels like a reasonable trade-off but i agree that "interior mutability" is a dumb term if there's no guarantee that its interior

Katrina Petrevice's talk establishes foundational knowledge of what `Ref` is, why it represents the ideal abstraction for concurrent cache implementations, and how it maintains both safety and purity in the presence of mutability.
