Would MvCI also count as “recent?” (Admittedly, it’s mainly just the Marvel side that has Disney-related issues, but still). Or is it just too old by now?

Word, like... I went so many years without playing vs people in MvCI and was able to hop right back in when the Beyond mod beta hit cause I been practicing my bnbs on my own a few times a year for fun, like martial arts katas, keeping the swords sharp.
And it's fun as hell!

Word, like... I went so many years without playing vs people in MvCI and was able to hop right back in when the Beyond mod beta hit cause I been practicing my bnbs on my own a few times a year for fun, like martial arts katas, keeping the swords sharp.

Theoretically, sure. But given that this is Sony we're talking about, they probably would've taken measures to prevent any direct competition for Marvel fighters for the next decade. Especially since (per various interviews) initial Tokon talks between Sony & MG started a year after MvCI went under.

the more I see other modern fighting games play with tag mechanics the more I realize that MvCI not having regular assists was an extremely smart bit of restraint

Comments like that are also extra funny because if I remember correctly, no one liked playing Thor in the last 2 major MVC games because he was kinda slow (at least in MVCI) and he needed very specific team assists to actually get setups going.

Marvel vs. Capcom was the first fighting game I put any real time into. I remember tearing a page out of GamePro and taking it to the bodega so I could see what the super move animations looked like.
