NHS England has just published the updated Accessible Information Standard, which makes clear how NHS and social care services in England must provide information to blind and partially sighted people in a way they can read.

It's a step forward - here's what's improved:

🧵 Inaccessible health information is a risk to patient safety.

Today we delivered a mock hospital appointment letter to Wes Streeting. The important information was missing, to highlight how blind and partially sighted people are receiving health info they can’t read.

Today, we joined @rnib.bsky.social & other charities to deliver an unreadable health appointment letter to Wes Streeting, to show how we, as people with communication needs, still regularly receive vital health and care information which we are unable to read or understand. #MyInfoMyWay

While these are welcome improvements, there're still some major barriers to delivering the Standard:

- inadequate NHS and social care IT systems
- staff training is limited and isn't mandatory
- no routine high-level oversight of implementation from NHS England, the DHSC or the CQC 3/7

The updated Standard now requires NHS services to regularly check that patients’ communication needs are up to date and being met.

And NHS and social care organisations have increased responsibilities to oversee accessible information being put into practice. 2/7
