What is certain is that he walks when autumn ripens and the woods begin their slow descent into sleep. Maelgor is never truly seen. Travelers glimpse only fragments: a shifting shadow among sap-green trunks, the sudden swirl of caramel leaves rising from an unseen step, the faint gleam of steel moving through dove-gray mist. By the time the eye finds the shape, it is already gone. Hunters who enter the autumn woods soon learn the forest is no longer theirs. Footprints vanish behind them. Game grows silent. The wind carries the sound of leaves that move against the breeze, as though something large passes through the undergrowth without touching it. Those who survive claim Maelgor does not hunt for flesh. He hunts awareness. He tests those who walk the woods without respect, who believe themselves masters of the wild. The arrogant feel his presence first: the weight of unseen eyes, the tightening of breath, the strange certainty that every step forward has already been predicted. Only when a traveler finally understands they are not the hunter but the hunted does Maelgor withdraw, satisfied.
