So n71 supposedly gives me a better range at 600 MHz, which is 0.6 GHz like I wrote, but a much narrower pipe. At 20 MHz I’m at about one fifth of the width n41 can use, and even at the n71 max of 35 I’m at about one third.

That list is the allowed channel widths, in MHz, for each band group. For n71, under (𝒽𝒽) is:

{5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35}
November 4, 2026 at 11:39 PM
My phone was using 20 MHz, which is in that list, so it's not a mistake. But 35 is the top for n71 in that list.

5G Signal (Band n71):
my 5G signal strength, measured as RSRP, is -105 dBm.

In cellular networking, anything weaker than -100 dBm is considered a poor signal.

Band n71 (600 MHz) is a low-frequency band meant to provide broad, long-range coverage, but my connection here is very weak.

So for an upload, I only get that one up block, which is why n71 uploads are narrow even when the signal looks strong.

I love 5G. This is so awesome. Can you get this picture yet?
November 4, 2026 at 11:41 PM
For n71 FDD, the paired blocks are:

* Down, tower to phone:
617 to 652 MHz.

That's 652 minus 617, which is 35 MHz.

* Up, phone to tower:
663 to 698 MHz.
That's 698 minus 663, which is also
35 MHz.

If it jumps 10 dB or more, it's mostly the building. If it stays near -117 outside, that's a solid report to T-Mobile with TAC 33534, Cell Id 53384193, B66 at -117, and n71 at -105.
November 3, 2026 at 5:39 AM
Also worth remembering: low-band n71 is coverage-first with modest speeds, and 20 MHz NR plus 10 MHz LTE is narrow even on a good day, so this setup was never going to be a high-speed one even with stronger signal.
November 3, 2026 at 5:40 AM
The 12 dB gap between them is also less mysterious than it looks. B66 is around 2100 MHz downlink, n71 is 600 MHz, and free-space loss alone accounts for about:

20 x log10(2100 / 600) = about 10.9 dB
November 3, 2026 at 5:38 AM
That fits the pattern in your earlier capture too, same TAC 33534, LTE also at -117 dBm, while NR had switched from n41 to n71. The LTE anchor staying pinned at -117 across bands looks like a location/coverage edge, not the phone picking the wrong band.
November 3, 2026 at 5:39 AM
Second, on the usual RSRP scale, -105 dBm and -117 dBm aren't in the same bucket: -100 to -110 is fair, -110 to -120 is poor. So n71 at -105 is fair-to-weak, while LTE B66 at -117 is genuinely at the weak edge.
