Mary Terrell (09/1863-07/1954) civil right activist, journalist, teacher, one of the 1st Black women to earn a college degree. She was the first Black woman in the US
appoint to the school board of a major city, serving in DC 1895-1906. Charter member of the NAACP (1909) and helped found NACW(1896)

Brown wrote books on public speaking and authored several books documenting Black history and excellence. While president of the NACW, she led the successful campaign to preserve the Washington, D.C., home of Frederick Douglass as a national memorial. She died in 1949 at age 104 (or 99). /end

Septima Poinsette Clark, daughter of former slaves, was a teacher, active member of NAACP, & the NACW.

She was the Director of Highlander Folk School’s Citizenship Education Program in TN, which developed many African American students into leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. (See Alt Text)

Black women often had to insist on their inclusion in national suffrage spaces--national leaders often tried to placate white Southern women who constantly threatened to boycott if Black women were involved. But they also did their own work in National Assoc of Colored Women #NACW #HATM #Suffs

The Stewarts sold the pharmacy in 1945. Ella Stewart became president of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs in 1948 and served until 1952. She lobbied for anti-lynching legislation, equal opportunity in housing and education, and desegregation of local movie theaters. /5

In 1935, she left the NACW + founded the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), an organization with a more explicit civil rights agenda. Bethune’s friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the reasons for the creation of the NCNW.

Free dissertation idea:

A history of Black women in the late c19 Colored Conventions. We worked *so* hard to find traces of antebellum women by reading against the grain, but there are SO MANY women in the 1870s-1890s. How does their activism show how the CCs set up the Niagara/NACW/club movements?
