The Iran deal gives me hope for NAFTA/CUSMA - play our cards right and we might get Hawaii.

U.S.–Canada trade has a long history: 1854 Reciprocity Treaty → 1965 Auto Pact → 1989 Free Trade Agreement → 1994 NAFTA → 2020 USMCA/CUSMA. ⁣
⁣
Despite disputes, we’ve had steadily deeper trade integration.

That's the funny part. Nafta and USMCA/CUSMA generally benefitted the US over the the other Nafta countries. It was well known fact. I used to teach a Nafta trade course back in the day.

NAFTA….😊…….CUSMA USMCA MUSCA… all stupid acronyms..

What is CUSMA and USMCA and MUSCA??

….it’s NAFTA….

NAFTA worked fine, but Trump replaced it with USMCA, an abbreviation so awkward that Canada flipped it to CUSMA just to make it more sayable. Still, CUSMA sounds less like a major trade agreement and more like an STI, which feels about right given who forced it on us. NAFTA was better.

Everyone’s clear that this will kill NAFTA/CUSMA right? No point pretending it exists past tomorrow if what the WH briefer said this aft is true.

Canada:
-PAID 💯 all the costs of building the Gordon Howe bridge
-Economic benefits of CUSMA agreement, (and past NAFTA), tip in favour of the USA.
The USA has a generous tariff-FREE dairy quota within CUSMA. The US HAS NEVER - not once - come close to meeting that quota.
-The NHL is mostly US teams

Now Ron... careful there, buddy. Us Canadians were perfectly happy saying NAFTA. This whole CUSMA thing Donald is making us use now sounds less like a trade deal and more like something you need antibiotics for.

People forgets that we existed as a country before NAFTA & CUSMA

Canada thrived before NAFTA. We will thrive post CUSMA.
Big breath

We expected this. Hyperbole to pressure Canada and Mexico into making concessions.

Canada existed before NAFTA. We will exist post CUSMA.

CUSMA was an extension of Nafta.
Nafta was started by CPC and renegotiated in 2020.
Trump was in agreement of then.
He's breaking a legal contract.
There will be legal consequences.

In 2024, after being elected for the second time, Trump publicly railed against CUSMA using the exact same language he'd used to decry NAFTA, branding it "a very bad deal" that needed to be shredded and renegotiated.

(once again, I point people to medium.com/the-canadian... because NAFTA / CUSMA is the best way for US citizens who have disabilities to get out, as there are no medical checks required for the CUSMA professionals or intra-company transfer visa routes)

In 2020, Donald Trump ripped up NAFTA, a trade deal that conferred a huge advantage to the USA at Canada's expense, and replaced it with CUSMA, a trade deal that was *even more* advantageous to America, and even *worse* for Canada.

Let’s be honest, CUSMA sounds more like STD than anything else. I was fine with NAFTA.
September 30, 2026 at 2:11 PM
If we don't meet their demands. CUSMA/NAFTA is up for renegotiation soon. Spooky for Canada and Mexico.

tRump WILL let CUSMA expire! Stop supporting USA! No vacationing there, no buying their produce etc and most certainly not Vehicles manufacted in the USA! We survived pre NAFTA and we will again! #CanadaStrong #cdnpoli #CUSMA

yeah, lets talk about CUSMA, Hoekstra you dumbass.

The trade deal that TRUMP DEMANDED AS REPLACEMENT FOR NAFTA - which he whined like a bitch was unfair. Trump himself 'negotiated' CUSMA. Don't come at us that it's unfair. It's your bosses work you dick.

During Trump‘s first term, when Scheer was Tory leader, his stance on the NAFTA renegotiations was demand that Trudeau roll over for Trump on absolutely everything and then after CUSMA was signed said he would‘ve gotten a better deal (without ever saying how)

We had an agreement called NAFTA. Trump 1.0 blew it up. We negotiated a new agreement with Trump 1.0 called CUSMA (aka USMCA). Trump 2.0 blew it up. Why on Earth would anyone think that a new agreement with a fully fascist Trump 2.0 would provide any stability whatsoever?

I think someone needs to point this out to the rest of the world as well. Maybe they'll get off their knees and pivot away from the US too! #tariffs #CanadaStrong #cdnpoli

He did the similar thing changing NAFTA to CUSMA. Claimed it was the best deal in history.
Now canada is unfair.
He's psychotic

Carney could make a thousand deals with Trump but he will never be able to trust Trump to keep his word

Trump renegotiated NAFTA to form the CUSMA in his first term and then went back on his word in his second term calling it a terrible deal
He's a mad dictator who's prone to whims
