Driving in the snow with a great set of tires and without traffic is sheer joy. Driving home from Newark Airport in an S2000 after flying home from NAIAS during a blizzard is sheer terror.

Reminds me of a concept car that the Big 3 would unveil at the NAIAS, which would draw great buzz then a few years later they would reveal the production version that vaguely resembles it.

In both cases their early cars were not so good but improved very quickly. The same thing with China is happening. They showed up at NAIAS in the late 2000s with the goofiest, laughable stuff and now their leading the EV space.

The Ford Verve concepts appeared between September 2007 and January 2008. The first appeared at Frankfurt as a three door hatch, the second in the U.S. two months later as a sedan, and the third a revised sedan at the NAIAS in 2008. All three previewed the sixth-generation Fiesta.

I had a great deal of hope when the third-generation Lancia (Chrysler) Delta landed at the NAIAS in January 2010 to gauge public reaction. Alas, it never amounted to anything more here.

My 2002 Mini Cooper R50. The North American spec car was unveiled on 8 January 2001 at the NAIAS in Detroit. Imports didn’t begin though until 22 March 2002, and mine was built that August.
