The path out of Gaza began, Moumen Al-Natour said, with men at his door. In July 2025, he said Hamas operatives came to his house in Gaza City’s al-Shati refugee camp and ordered him to go to Shifa Hospital for questioning by Hamas’ internal security service. Al-Natour refused. He managed to escape, leaving behind Hamas operatives who demanded to know: “Where is Moumen?” The men who came for him, he said, did not come only for him. “They threatened my family, all of my members in my family, my mother, my sisters, my brothers,” Al-Natour said. He fled to another location, moving through Khan Yunis and Al-Mawasi in search of a way out. What happened next would take him through a militia-controlled area, into contact with international advocates and, eventually, to Italy—physically safe, but far from the city, family and future he still calls his own. Gazan lawyer and human rights advocate Moumen Al-Natour says he escaped Hamas in 2025 but has not escaped the future of Gaza. Now living in Italy after fleeing Gaza City, he is calling for Hamas to be removed from power, for civilians to be separated from its fighters, and for a new political order built on peace with Israel. In a wide-ranging interview with Felice Friedson, Al-Natour recounts Hamas operatives arriving at his home in the al-Shati refugee camp and ordering him to report for questioning. He refused, moved through Khan Yunis and Al-Mawasi, and eventually reached an area controlled by Yasser Abu Shabab’s armed group. His family made it to Italy, he said, but he rejected Abu Shabab’s reported offer to join the group and take a leadership role. “I refused this because I want to be in government, not in militia,” he said.
