08 December 2025 Punjab Khabarnama Bureau : India's medical education system is on the cusp of a radical overhaul, facing changes that could redefine how future healthcare professionals are selected, trained, and evaluated. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has announced that from 2026–27, NEET-UG, the exam long reserved for MBBS and BDS aspirants, will be mandatory for a vast range of allied health courses.

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) has issued a public notice clarifying that physiotherapists and occupational therapists are not permitted to prescribe medicines or provide allopathic treatment, underscoring limits on their scope of practice under existing law.  Clarification on scope of practice In its notice, the Commission said professionals in physiotherapy and occupational therapy are authorised to provide only therapeutic and promotional health services.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed the higher education institutions (HEIs) to discontinue offering programmes in healthcare and allied disciplines under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021, through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online mode from the academic session beginning July-August 2025. The decision, taken at the UGC’s 592nd meeting on July 23, 2025, follows the recommendations of the 24th Distance Education Bureau Working Group meeting held on April 22, 2025.

The letter of 17 July from the National Commission for Allied and Health Professions (NCAHP) shows growing concerns about the delay that could affect the quality of health care throughout the country. Many states have not yet created these important advice, as required by the NCAHP law of 2021. This act has been introduced to create a regulation and set clear rules for training and work of various healthcare support employees.

The curriculum covers a wide range of professions such as physiotherapy; Applied psychology and behavior of behavior; Optometry; Nutrition and dietetics; Technologies of dialysis therapies and dialysis therapies; Radiotherapy technology; Medical radiology and imaging technology; Theater technology of anesthesia and operations; Health information management; and medical colleagues.
